Layover: Brussels, Belgium
This trip is one of my favourite stories to share because it was such an unlikely set of circumstances that led to me going to BRU. Someone had picked up the crappy domestic trip that I had, leaving me with a chunk of days off - and the ability to pick up something amazing. I looked at all of the trips available and said to myself, "Where do I want to go?" Brussels was there and the deal was done. When we were deplaning in BRU, a few passengers were chatting about their plans in the city. We overheard that the Belgian Beer Weekend festival was going on.
That's all I needed to hear.
After a short catnap at the hotel, a group of crewmembers gathered in the lobby and went down to the festival. Beer. EVERYWHERE. And not just any beer - Belgian beer. Yummo! We divided our time between the festival and visiting chocolate shops, of which there are plenty. We quickly caught on to the fact that the chocolatiers give out free samples. I ate so much chocolate that day! I ended up grabbing some macarons to enjoy at home.
After filling up on chocolate and beer, we visited Manneken Pis, which was a lot smaller than I thought it would be (isn't that true of most historical/cultural landmarks?). And we ended our adventure in Brussels with dinner and drinks on the Grand Place. A nice way to wrap up an unexpectedly amazing trip to Belgium.
Here's to delicious chocolate and beer,
